Improving Housing Affordability

Homes provide a space for children to thrive, small businesses to start, and families to grow. We need to make sure affordable housing is within reach.

One of my main priorities is helping to make housing more affordable for the people of south San Diego County. I have long supported the Low Income Housing Tax Credits and championed tax credits for first-time homebuyers. It’s also why I have championed efforts to support community development, affordable housing, and first-generation homebuyers.

Housing development simply has not kept pace with our region’s growing population, and we have seen that as a result, housing costs have increased at a much faster rate than people’s incomes. That’s one of the reasons why I led legislation to help provide housing assistance in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. I’m proud that this legislation was signed into law.

While we continue to push for increased access to affordable housing, I am also working to make sure that people who are able to find housing that they can afford do not face discrimination. I’m leading the Homeownership for Dreamers Act to make sure that Dreamers who have worked hard and saved in order to buy a home are not discriminated against because of their immigration status. Hard working immigrant families deserve an equal opportunity to achieve the American Dream.
